Knowing The Self

How does one come to know the Self? A great many people are asleep on this planet, and the reason is because we live unconsciously and by default. We believe we are who and what we have been taught, and have come to accept as true, about ourselves.

But this is not who and what we are. It is the mind, and it is our mind and suppressed emotions, along with the fact that we don't live from our hearts, that has created this condition.

Our identification with our mind/ego and it's myriad of beliefs, including that of separation, actually keeps us from knowing our True Self and keeps us “separate”. We are slaves to our ego and it's patterns, and through our clinging to judgments and beliefs and identifying with them as “who we are” we are kept enslaved.

We can free ourselves of this bondage however. When we begin to become aware of our mind and patterns and start to bring awareness to our dysfunction and egoic distortions.. and by this I mean our irrational beliefs and judgments that we have learned and have placed on ourselves, on life or on others.. we begin to open the way for healing and for the Truth of Life to reveal itself to us.

For some, a part of this movement of unfolding also includes uncovering childhood emotional pain and allowing it to express itself. As children many of us we were unable to for a variety of reasons, but as adults these locked up feelings need to be expressed if we are to fully heal. All of our blocked energies and mental distortions must be brought to Awareness and integrated in order for us to Become.

Awareness in it's truest sense, is a fundamental aspect of our being. It is that part of us which arises in quiet moments, or in meditation when the mind is silent. It is also that part of us which witnesses. To become Aware of the activities of our mind and our emotional nature requires tapping into that deeper part of our Being, and from that place looking at ourselves. The very act of doing this initiates the process of healing and begins to bring us Home and to our True Self.

We must be fearless in looking at ourselves and what we have become as a result of our conditioning, but paradoxically we also must embrace and accept all of those aspects of ourselves that we may be judging and do not like as we discover them. When we do this, we release the energy and allow movement and inner change to happen.

In addition, the practice of “dropping down into our heart” and shifting our identification from mind/ego to our feeling nature and Love, facilitates greater awareness and inner quietude. When we do this and then become mindful of what it is we are doing in every moment, we bring ourselves into Present Moment Awareness.

Living fully in the Present Moment has the effect of quieting our minds automatically, and also creates more space and inner peace. This in turn makes it easier for us to see ourselves and the workings of our mind, and also creates the conditions for That Which Is, or what some call the Truth Of Life, to rise up and reveal Itself to us. The practice of Gratitude and Kindness in every moment, and particularly in the morning when we wake up, is a wonderful way to accomplish this.

When we drop into our hearts and live from a state of Love and Gratitude, we find that life changes significantly. Not only are we able to focus easily on being in the Present Moment and paying attention to what we are doing, but we also notice that people and circumstances in our lives change as well. This is because we are becoming attuned to our True Self and allowing the movement of Gd in and through our lives.

To many people, particulary in the West, this concept is quite foreign because we are conditioned to live in our head and are continuously engaged in thinking about the past or the future. But ironically, this is not our natural state of Being. Living in Presence and dwelling in Present Moment Awareness is our natural state. Those who live in this way know that. They know that Truth arises from Silence, and that Truth reveals to us what we Are. We are One. We are Love. We are God.

All of humanity exists in The Body of God. God is in us and we are in God.. and in truth we ARE God because there is no separation.. yet we do not know it because we are out of alignment with our True Nature. But we CAN come into Alignment and bring ourselves into Present Moment Awareness, and in this way, what IS will open to us. If we have the desire, and prepare the ground we will experience healing, happiness and fulfillment, and by Grace and Intent, eventually Spiritual Awakening.

Until next time, keep smiling!
